Barry Lane, Wallington will be closed to vehicle traffic from late-April 2022. Authorised emergency vehicles will be able to use the track if necessary.
Barry Lane is an unformed dirt track, intended for use as a fire access track.
It has not been built or maintained to handle the increasing number of vehicles that are consistently using it to access the southern end of Lings Road.
The City appreciates there is a range of views on this issue and has carefully considered the safest and most appropriate course of action.
After analysing recent traffic counts – and reviewing the associated issues of road safety and general amenity - we have determined that gating access to Barry Lane is the best option.
Property owners will be required to use entrance points via alternative roads.
Emergency services are aware of the changes and will be able to use the track if necessary.
Other motorists will be directed to use Lings Road, which is the safest route for regular use.
This will have no impact on travel times for motorists coming from the north. It will add just a few minutes to the journey for those who have previously accessed Barry Lane from the south.
Free from traffic, Barry Lane will be available for passive recreation use, such as horse riding and walking.
