UN Watch brought Venezuelan President-elect Edmundo González to the floor of the U.N. Human Rights Council to speak on dictator Nicolás Maduro’s violent repression following his fraudulent election.

Full Transcript (English Translation):

Mr. President,

I am Edmundo González Urrutia, and I am addressing this Council today on behalf of millions of Venezuelans who have resisted the repression with dignity, who have expressed their democratic will, and who have been persecuted because of it.

The Venezuelan State seeks to present an image of cooperation, but reality contradicts its narrative. In Venezuela, the jails remain full of political prisoners and repression is the only response to those demanding fundamental rights.

For Venezuelans, it is essential that the Office of the High Commissioner maintain its presence in the country, that the International Fact-Finding Mission continues its work of documentation and denunciation, and that this Council reaffirms, as it has been doing, its commitment to defending the fundamental human rights of Venezuelans.

Today, Venezuelans are not asking for compassion. We demand justice. We demand freedom. And we count on the support of the international community to achieve this.
