Virtual Debriefing On Findings Of News Deserts Study

Please join professor Tim Franklin, director of the Medill Local News Initiative and John M. Mutz Chair in Local News at Northwestern University, Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 10 a.m. (CDT) for a virtual briefing about the yet-to-be-released findings of the 2024 State of Local News report.

Registration is required to attend

Researchers from Medill's Local News Initiative will talk about the accelerating loss of local newspapers in the last year and expanding "news deserts" that leave more and more Americans with limited or no access to reliable local news and information.

A nationwide, county-by-county study of local news outlets, the report also includes a "Bright Spots" map showing local news startups in the U.S. as they've appeared over the past five years. Medill profiles 12 local news organizations with promising business models for the future.

Those in attendance will be invited to ask questions following the presentation by Franklin, State of Local News Project Director Zach Metzger and contributing editors Autumn Brewington and Paul Farhi.
