This week I will visit the Netherlands to attend events commemorating 10 years since the downing of Flight MH17.
298 people, including 38 people who called Australia home, were killed when a Russian surface to air missile brought down MH17 over Ukraine on 17 July 2014.
During my visit I will meet family members of those killed, and join them at the MH17 memorial for a service hosted by the MH17 Air Disaster (Next of Kin), members of the diplomatic corps and government officials from the grieving nations.
At the service I will pay tribute to the courage and resilience of those whose loved ones were killed aboard MH17, those who responded to the disaster and the investigation team who identified those responsible for this horrific crime.
We remain dedicated to seeking truth, justice and accountability from those responsible for this horrific act and call on the Russian Federation to take responsibility for the role it played and to cooperate to ensure those who fired the missile serve their sentences.
During my two day visit I will also meet representatives from other countries that participated in the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) (Belgium, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Ukraine), senior officials in the Dutch Government, and representatives from international organisations based in the Hague.
The Hon Michelle Rowland MP will be acting Attorney-General and Cabinet Secretary until my return to Australia on Friday, 19 July 2024.
