Vizient Honors UCSF Health for Excellence in Patient Care

UCSF Health has been named by Vizient, Inc., as a top performer in the 2024 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Study, in recognition of the high quality of patient care it provides.

This is the third year in a row that Vizient has recognized UCSF Health as a leader in health care quality. This year, it was ranked seventh among the 115 comprehensive academic medical centers assessed. The health care performance improvement company reviewed 860 hospitals for the Birnbaum Award, with four categories based on size and acuity of care.

Our number one priority at UCSF Health is to provide the highest quality, safest care possible, and to make that care accessible for all."

"Our number one priority at UCSF Health is to provide the highest quality, safest care possible, and to make that care accessible for all," said Suresh Gunasekaran, president and chief executive officer of UCSF Health. "Being recognized by Vizient as one of the nation's top academic medical centers is gratifying, because it reflects what I see every day in our team members who constantly strive to do better for our patients and the communities we serve."

Conducted annually since 2005, the Vizient study measures performance quality in six areas: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness and equity of care.

"Our exceptional performance in Vizient reflects the dedication of our incredible teams, who consistently deliver outstanding, patient-centered care to every patient and community we serve," said Amy Lu, MD, UCSF Health Chief Quality Officer.

The study includes measures from the Vizient Clinical Data Base, as well as performance data from the HCAHPS survey and the CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network. Each year, the assessment identifies structures and processes associated with high quality and safety across a broad spectrum of patient care activity.

"Leading hospitals are leveraging data and analytics to provide superior clinical outcomes," said David Levine, chief medical officer for Vizient. "This award honors UCSF Health for demonstrating leadership focused on results and a culture of collaboration and adaptability that is necessary to succeed."

The ranking is among several leading third-party assessments that recognize UCSF Health's leadership in quality, safety and excellence in care. UCSF Health received an "A" safety rating, the highest grade, for its hospitals at Parnassus Heights and Mission Bay in The Leapfrog Group's most recent reviews, and a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for quality of care. UCSF Medical Center is consistently named among the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report and has achieved the gold standard "Magnet recognition" for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for more than a decade.
