Voice Your Opinion on Energy & Industry Emissions Reduction

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Government is committed to taking action to reduce our emissions and build resilience to climate change.

Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan, said to help achieve this goal, the Draft Emissions Reduction and Resilience Plans for Energy and Industrial Processes and Product Use (IPPU) have been released today for public consultation. Tasmanians and interested organisations are invited to have their say.

"The draft plans highlight priorities and future opportunities to reduce emissions and climate related risks. These two plans specifically focus on our major industrials and energy sector have been prepared together, recognising both sectors have similarities," Minister Duigan said.

"The latest emissions data shows the industrial sector accounts for almost 20 per cent of Tasmania's total emissions each year and the energy sector accounts for 22 per cent.

Energy demand in Tasmania is growing due to population growth and electrification, meaning Tasmania will require additional electricity generation and more renewable alternatives to maintain our net zero status into the future.

"Our major industrials will need access to more renewable energy generation and support to electrify production processes in order to reduce emissions," Minister Duigan said.

"That's why we have set a target to double the production of renewable electricity by 2040 to reduce emissions and secure energy production for all Tasmanians to ensure reliable and clean energy."

Key proposed action areas under the plans include:

Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is all about making Tasmanian the best place to live, work and raise a family. These goals are about making that a reality.

"I encourage anyone interested in improving the way we transition our industrial and energy sectors to a low emissions future to provide feedback on the draft plans," Minister Duigan said.

Consultation will close on 7 October 2024.
