Volunteering WA's Volunteering Management Activity (VMA) funded six remarkable project partners in 2024. This year's recipients are driving significant change and fostering community engagement across Western Australia.
Supporting women and girls in the Kimberley
The Kimberley Aboriginal Women's Council (KAWC) is making strides in empowering Aboriginal women to mentor young girls through their Rise and Shine initiative. The KAWC team recently visited six towns across the Kimberley, engaging with local women and girls on how they can come together to achieve better outcomes for their community. The initiative will provide training and support to Aboriginal women, equipping them to guide and mentor young girls, helping them build confidence, leadership skills, and resilience.
Connecting young people with volunteering opportunities
Volunteer South West and Teach Learn Grow are both working to create opportunities for youth to volunteer across regional and metro WA. Through surveys and outreach into school communities, they've connected with over 300 young people, and have begun helping them to plan their volunteer engagement over the next six months. These partnerships aim to inspire the next generation of volunteers, strengthening the social fabric communities across the State.
Revitalising Carnarvon with art and community spirit
In Carnarvon, the Art of Volunteering project has transformed a once dilapidated bus stop into a vibrant community space, thanks to the efforts of local volunteers. The Shire of Carnarvon has empowered residents to lead their own volunteer initiatives, bringing the power of art and local culture into the heart of the community. This project serves as a reminder of how volunteering can revitalize public spaces and foster stronger connections among neighbours.
In March 2025, Volunteering WA will open the next round of grants for the 2025-26 financial year, with a new focus on promoting projects into regions previously unfunded. This expansion promises to bring more opportunities for communities across WA to develop and benefit from volunteer-led initiatives.
Together, these projects highlight the power of community-driven change and the essential role of volunteers in building a stronger, more connected Western Australia.
