Volunteers hang up their aprons for final time

Volunteers at the Paragon Café at the Pioneer Settlement hung up their aprons for the final time on Thursday, 5 August.

Volunteers from the Friends of the Pioneer Settlement have been running the café as part of their ongoing commitment to support the Pioneer Settlement since the Paragon Cafes reopening within the Pioneer Settlement in 2016.

The café was named after the Paragon Café that was open in Swan Hill from 1926 until the 1980s. It stood where Solz Shoes is now situated in Campbell Street. The go-to place for local young people after a night at the pictures, it served traditional meals like pies, peas and mashed potato, milkshakes and malt sundaes.

The Friends' Laura Smith said Paragon café volunteers - who previously operated the Bakery tearooms at the Settlement -.would be hanging up their beloved café aprons for the final time.

"The time has now come for our dedicated group of volunteers to ease into roles which are a little less demanding than operating a seven day a week café".

"These volunteers have been actively involved with Pioneer Settlement for many years - the time has now come for us to take some time for ourselves and enjoy retired life," she said.

The Mayor Bill Moar and the Pioneer Settlement General Manager, Jessica Warburton extended their thanks to the dedicated café volunteers for their tremendous efforts for 30 years.

"The café volunteers have contributed an amazing $1.5m revenue to the Pioneer Settlement as well as provided another experience for Pioneer Settlement guests.

Ms Warburton said there would now be an opportunity for a new prospective business to establish within the refurbished Dumonsa Hall.

"As this door closes, another opens and we now have an opportunity for a new business to be established within this fantastic venue," Ms Warburton said.

Expressions of Interest are currently invited from experienced food, beverage and function operators in the operation of the Paragon Café an onsite café within Pioneer Settlement.
