Cessnock City Council is on the lookout for volunteers to join the repair team for the Repair Café events, part of its 2024 Less is More sustainability program.
The Repair Café is a place to socialise, learn new skills, and connect with others while giving your belongings a new lease on life.
Anyone with the following skills is encouraged to volunteer: bicycle repairs, electrical repairs: qualified electrician, electrical engineers, clock and watch repairs, leather goods and jewellery, shoe and bag repairs, knife and tool sharpening, general handyperson skills, sewing machine repairs and maintenance, crocket and knitting repairs and book binders.
Cessnock City Mayor Jay Suvaal said the repair café is a great opportunity to keep items in use and out of landfill.
"I'm thrilled to see the community come together to embrace sustainability and resourcefulness," said Clr Suvaal.
"Whether you're handy on the tools or a whiz at sewing, we'd appreciate your time and expertise at the repair café.
"This event is not just about fixing broken things; it's about fostering a culture of care and environmental responsibility in our region."
The first Repair Café will be held on Saturday 6 April, 10am-12:30pm at Kearsley Hall.
Anyone in the community is welcome to bring their broken or damaged items for free repairs. There will be tea, coffee, light refreshments and activities for kids.
The events are made possible thanks to our partnership with Lake Macquarie Sustainable Neighbourhood Alliance.
