Multi skilled CFA volunteers do more than just fight fires, with two brigades last week saving some furry friends from unlucky situations.

On Saturday (30/11/2024) volunteers from the Skye Fire Brigade responded to a cat stuck in a tree at about 9.52am in Carrum Downs.

Skye Fire Brigade Captain Ryan Larkins attended the incident and said it was a huge success.

"As we arrived it was raining and we had been told it was possible the cat had been up there all night," he said.

Eager to reunite the cat with its owner, crews used a ladder from the pumper at the scene to safely climb to the top of the tree and bring the cat back to the ground.

"It was fantastic to reunite the cat with its owner and it bought a smile to everyone's face when the job was all done," Ryan said.

"The cat was pretty happy to be in the arms of one of my fellow volunteers and then the arms of its owner."

Thanks to the work of CFA volunteers the cat avoided any injury.

The incident was deemed under control and safe at 10.16am.

Just days earlier on Thursday (28/11/2024) at about 6.12pm Connewarre Fire Brigade responded to a kitten stuck in a drain in Armstrong Creek on Barwon Heads Road.

Rafal Kennedy from Connewarre Fire Brigade said it was lucky crews were already nearby.

"The crew was responding to another incident nearby when we were alerted some members of the public had seen and heard the kitten in the drain," he said.

Volunteers worked quickly to free the little kitten from the drain, who was thankfully uninjured.

Safe but looking a little wet, the kitten was lovingly taken into the care of a local animal rescue.
