WA Science Centres Get Funding Boost

  • State Government announces $1 million boost for Scitech
  • Further $400,000 over four years to support Gravity Discovery Centre
  • New exhibits and experiences to focus on WA scientists, industries and First Nations science
  • Green Head space rocket debris to feature in new exhibition

The Cook Labor Government will provide a $1 million funding boost to Scitech to create new exhibits with a focus on Western Australian scientists, industries and First Nations science.

Additional funding was allocated through the 2024-25 State Budget to support Scitech to deliver these new experiences, as well as enhance their education and engagement reach across the State.

Science Minister Stephen Dawson confirmed the funding while announcing the centre would also host an exciting new exhibition featuring space debris that washed up in Green Head last year.

On top of the Scitech funding, the Cook Government has also allocated $400,000 to support the Gravity Discovery Centre over the next four years.

This latest round of funding builds on the Cook Government's commitment to advancing interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as well as building scientific literacy and indigenous knowledge within Western Australia.

Scitech's funding will enable more regional and remote communities to access its outreach programs.

Scitech has been inspiring young Western Australians to take an interest in STEM since 1988. The centre receives $9.46 million in State Government funding per year and is a key partner in implementing the Government's STEM skills strategy.

Scitech's ongoing collaboration with government initiatives like the STEM skills strategy underscores its pivotal role in shaping the future of education and innovation in the region.

As stated by Science Minister Stephen Dawson:

"Scitech remains one of our State's most valuable resources when it comes to engaging and educating future generations in STEM fields. Equally, the Gravity Discovery Centre also does a great job on building an awareness and future interest in STEM.

"The Cook Government is focused on making Western Australia an international hub for science, innovation and technology and these centres play a crucial role in preparing our State's future leaders in this sector.

"This million-dollar commitment will stimulate Scitech's important work in building awareness and opportunities in STEM and provide a platform to promote this focus across the State.

"The range of new attractions and experiences will serve as important education pieces on Western Australian science breakthroughs and industries, highlighting what we're capable of achieving as well as teaching us about First Nations science."
