WA Startups Invited to Apply for SXSW Sydney

  • Government opens applications for WA startups to join Sydney SXSW mission
  • The mission to take place from 14 18 October
  • Opportunity is for all WA founders at startup or scaleup stage to come along

Ten lucky local startup founders will get the opportunity to attend the 2024 SXSW Sydney conference, thanks to funding from the Cook Government.

Minister for Innovation and the Digital Economy Stephen Dawson has opened applications through the State Government's New Industries Fund for startups to join him on a special delegation to the conference.

Founded in 1987 in Austin, Texas, the SXSW brings together creators and entrepreneurs from across the world to meet, learn and share ideas, facilitating collaboration and innovation.

Taking place from 14 18 October, the Sydney mission will include curated delegation opportunities during the SXSW Sydney week and a pre-departure kick off.

The initiative follows a successful mission to SXSW in Austin in February, which included over 20 Western Australian delegates representing a range of sectors including energy transition; advanced technology and innovation; health and medical life sciences; creative and cultural industries; and First Nations entrepreneurship.

Applications are open to all founders at startup or scaleup stage, whose business is registered in Western Australia. Regional, female founders and First Nations entrepreneurs are encouraged to apply.

The Sydney Mission will be led by West Tech Fest in collaboration with the Creative Tech Village.

Applications close on 9 August 2024.

As stated by the Innovation and Digital Economy Minister Stephen Dawson:

"The Cook Government is committed to making our State a global hub for invention, investment, innovation and impact.

"Supporting local founders to attend the SXSW Sydney reinforces this commitment and will enable the brightest minds in our local innovation ecosystem to meet, learn and collaborate with entrepreneurs from across the world.

"This will be the second WA delegation to a SXSW event this year following a successful mission to Austin in February, which included representation from a range of industries including First Nations founders.

"I encourage all founders who want to grow their startups and network with global leaders in their respective industries to apply for this opportunity."
