A man wanted on two outstanding arrest warrants has been charged following a pursuit in Sydney's south-west this morning.
About 3am (Saturday 26 June 2021), officers from Bankstown Traffic and Highway Patrol were patrolling Stacey Street, Bankstown, when the noticed a black Mercedes travelling northbound allegedly exceeding the speed limit.
Checks revealed the number plants were stolen and police attempted to stop the vehicle on the Hume Highway.
When the driver allegedly failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated which continued through Yagoona, Chester Hill and Bass Hill.
Due to safety concerns it was terminated.
A short time later, the Mercedes was found crashed into a fence on Tower Road in the Bankstown Aerodrome. The two occupants had fled on foot.
With assistance from the Dog Unit, the driver, a 38-year-old man, and his passenger, a 20-year-old woman, were arrested on Tower Road, Milperra, about 3.15am.
The man was taken to Bankstown Police Station and charged with class A motor vehicle exceed speed, police pursuit-not stop-drive at speed, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, drive while licence cancelled, two counts of goods in personal custody suspected being stolen, use class A vehicle without unauthorised number plate affixed, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, not give particulars to owner of damaged property, trespass on prohibited Commonwealth land, and the outstanding warrants.
The Riverwood man was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today (Saturday 26 June 2021).
The woman was released pending further inquiries and taken to Liverpool Hospital for minor injuries sustained in the crash.
Inquiries are continuing.
