Tuesday, 19 April. Farmers, pastoralists, rural landholders and industry professionals are invited to apply for Western Australia's first Climate Smart Agriculture Fellowship, with applications closing on Tuesday, 26 April.
The free online Fellowship is being delivered in partnership by WA-based farmer movement, AgZero2030 and Farmers for Climate Action. With spaces available for up to 30 farmers, the six week Fellowship will take a deep dive into climate, carbon and energy literacy: covering global scale challenges and opportunities through locally specific adaptation and mitigation opportunities.
AgZero2030 Chair and Corrigin farmer, Simon Wallwork said: "The severe heatwaves and fires we experienced earlier this year are a stark reminder that WA is on the frontlines of a changing climate.
"As farmers, we're generally skilled at adapting to changing circumstances and committed to the sustainability of our farms.
"However, it can be hard to keep an eye on all the emerging research and business risks and opportunities. The Climate Smart Agriculture Fellowship makes this easy, pulling together expertise in climate change, carbon farming, adaptation, insurance, supply chains and much more to ensure we have the information we need to make proactive, climate smart decisions for our farms and in our communities."
Farmers for Climate Action CEO, Fiona Davis said: "Over the past four years, Farmers for Climate Action has run climate-smart agriculture fellowships across Vic, QLD and SA, training more than 160 farmers. We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with AgZero2030 to deliver this tailor-made program for WA."
"WA is renowned for being at the cutting edge of innovation, leading the way in no-till farming, controlled traffic farming and research into transformational adaptation in dryland systems.
"The Climate Smart Agriculture Fellowship builds on the decades of innovation and provides a unique opportunity to expand participant knowledge, create new intra and interstate networks and champion the future of a thriving climate smart agricultural region into the future."
Fellows will meet online for four hours every Wednesday from 11th May - 14th June.
