WA's Low-Waste Vision Honored at 2024 WasteSorted Awards

  • Winners of 2024 WasteSorted Awards announced
  • Awards celebrate those making landfill the last resort by avoiding, reusing, repairing and recycling waste

Western Australians who are driving WA's recycling and waste reduction efforts have been recognised and celebrated for their efforts at the annual 2024 WasteSorted Awards.

Winners were announced at a gala dinner award ceremony last night as part of the State's annual Waste and Resource Recovery Conference.

The awards celebrate those who make landfill the last resort by avoiding, reusing, repairing and recycling waste, while inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.

This year, 40 finalists across 10 categories - including individuals, businesses, government, schools, community organisations and not-for-profits - showcased how they are protecting WA's environment and supporting a more circular economy.

Select winners include:

  • City of Kwinana, which won the Community Engagement Award for its efforts to collect community data on recycling perceptions while educating residents at their bins;
  • Denmark Tip Shop, which won the Waste Champion Team Award for providing residents of and visitors to the Great Southern region the opportunity to reuse and upcycle;
  • Perth Chemical Specialists, which won the Small Business Award for creating a groundbreaking chemical innovation designed specifically for the treatment of ammonium nitrate emulsion waste; and
  • Uluu, which won the Innovation Award for its product that turns fermented seaweed into a plastic alternative to reduce plastic waste.

The full list of winners and finalists is available here.

As stated by Environment Minister Reece Whitby:

"Each winner serves as an example of the achievements our State can make when we strive towards a sustainable, low-waste future.

"A circular economy provides social and economic benefits by increasing employment opportunities and encouraging community action.

"These awards are a positive way to recognise and celebrate the great work being done by those who have committed to waste generation, increasing recovery of valuable materials from waste, and protecting the environment."
