Waste 2 Art Launch - Community Workshop

Gilgandra Shire Council

For immediate release.

Gilgandra Shire Council (GSC) is pleased to announce its involvement in the 2025 Community Art Exhibition and competition called Waste 2 Art – a FREE celebration of the reuse and recycling of waste. Each year there is a specific waste item, guiding the theme of the creations and changing the ways we look at waste. 2025 is the Year of Toys.

The Waste 2 Art competition invites and welcomes schools, community groups and individuals to turn their rubbish into art! There are a range of categories to encompass primary, secondary school students, community members and professional artists alike. The challenge is to look at waste differently, to change our perceptions about waste through creativity, and gives entrants the chance to explore and share their "waste reduction message"

General Manager, David Neeves, says

"Council is excited to again be involved in the Waste 2 Art program, having been involved in previous years and we again look forward to seeing the creative works from our local community." Adding, "Waste that goes into our waste bins ends up the landfill at the Gilgandra Waste Facility and it's surprising how much comes in each year. It's important we all think about how much waste we are producing as it doesn't just disappear!".

The project will be run in four stages beginning with community workshops, a local exhibition in May, which will lead to the winning artworks being sent on to feature in the Regional Exhibition to be held September 2025 in Dubbo.

GSC would like to invite all interested individual or groups of community members living in our Region to come along to the initial, introductory Community Workshop to share ideas and create.

The Year of Toys: Think broad and think big. Toys can include magazines, comics, books, dress-ups, costumes, arts and crafts and much more. While there is a theme to guide the entries, that doesn't mean that you have to use this material in your artwork. A few ways to embrace the theme:

  • You could use old or broken toys, that are destined for landfill to create works
  • You could make a toy from materials destined to become waste
  • You could make a work that celebrates the culture that surrounds toys – this might include costumes, comics, puzzles, games and much more.
