Weapons Seized, 16 Charged in Operation Brisbane Safe

Brisbane police have saturated the CBD in a safety blitz, disrupting and preventing unlawful activity as part of Operation Brisbane Safe.

The three-day operation resulted in three weapons being seized, along with 16 people charged on 22 offences.

Police conducted high-visibility patrols across the CBD, shopping precincts, major train and transport hubs, parks and other public spaces across Brisbane City.

General duties police led the operation and were supported by police from specialist units including Public Safety Response Team, Mounted Unit, Criminal Investigations Branch, Child Protection and Investigation Unit, Tactical Crime Squad, Railway Squad, District Crime Prevention Co-ordinators (DCPC), Bike Squad and Highway Patrol.

As a result of the operation 16 people were charged on 22 offences, including three men allegedly located with weapons.

On October 4 police were conducting patrols and a wanding operation in a shopping precinct, when they located a 43-year-old man allegedly in possession of a pocketknife, a small quantity of meth and a needle.

The man was charged with one count each of possess knife in a public place (flick knife), possessing dangerous drugs, possess utensil, fail to dispose and possess tainted property.

He is expected to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on November 5.

On October 8, Bike Squad intercepted a 37-year-old Loganlea woman riding an e-scooter allegedly without a helmet through a shopping precinct.

It will be further alleged the woman refused to supply her name and attempted to flee the scene, and threw an item at police.

She was arrested and charged with one count each of fail to wear helmet, contravene requirement, assault police and stealing.

She is expected to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on November 11.

Police also charged a 39-year-old Southport man with one count of possessing a knife in a public place on October 8.

It will be alleged he was in possession of a pocketknife when stopped for wanding at a shopping precinct near Elizabeth Street.

He is expected to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on October 28.

On October 9, police were conducting a wanding operation when they intercepted a 49-year-old Ascot man allegedly in possession of a baton.

He was charged with possessing a restricted item and is expected to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on October 21.

In addition to the arrests, police also conducted 121 business and public engagements, 48 random breath tests, issued 14 traffic infringement notices and conducted 48 metal detection scans under Jack's Law.

Acting Superintendent Jon Kent, said the three-day deployment is one component of a larger three-month operation, Operation Brisbane Safe.

"It's very important for us to make sure people who reside, visit, work or spend time in Brisbane can do so safely," he said.

"The purpose of this operation is to disrupt and prevent criminal activity and public nuisance behaviour in Brisbane City and ensure the general public feel safe."

"The operation targets both offending behaviour and promotes community safety by engaging with local community through our mobile police beat and DCPC unit."
