Nationals Member for Clarence, Richie Williamson, has welcomed the announcement of funding for planning and design work to upgrade the Casino Water Treatment Plant, an essential step toward improving water quality for the town's 11,000 residents.
The NSW Government and Richmond Valley Council will each contribute $68,500 - the funding being delivered through the Safe and Secure Water Program, ensuring that future upgrades meet the needs of the growing community.
Mr Williamson said the project involves the installation of a second barrier, such as ozone disinfection, which will help block parasites like cryptosporidium.
"Currently, the only treatment barrier in place is chlorine, which is ineffective against these types of parasites. Adding an additional barrier will significantly enhance the safety and reliability of Casino's drinking water," Mr Williamson said.
"The Casino Water Treatment Plant, built more than 40 years ago, has faced increasing challenges in treating river water during periods of drought, heavy rainfall, and bushfires.
"Upgrading the plant will not only improve drinking water quality but also increase efficiency and reduce operational costs for Richmond Valley Council."
Mr Williamson acknowledged Richmond Valley Council's proactive approach and the importance of government collaboration in ensuring vital infrastructure projects remain a priority.
"This funding is a step in the right direction for Casino and demonstrates a clear commitment to future-proofing the region's water infrastructure. Clean, reliable drinking water is a fundamental necessity, and I am pleased to see Richmond Valley Council and the NSW Government working together to address these challenges," Mr Williamson said.
"By upgrading the water treatment plant, we will see a significant boost in the quality of water available to locals, businesses, and visitors alike. This is an investment in the health and wellbeing of our community."
The concept design and planning process is expected to be completed by the end of the year, paving the way for future upgrades.
