Welcoming 11 New Midwives To Tasmanian Hospitals

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Liberal Government has welcomed 11 new midwives who have joined the health system today, ready to care for the health and wellbeing of mothers and babies across the State.

Minister for Health, Jacquie Petrusma, said the midwives celebrated their graduation at a ceremony in Launceston today.

"Midwives play a vital role in ensuring women, babies and families receive the care and support they need through such a transformative time in their lives," Minister Petrusma said.

"Tasmania's healthcare sector is experiencing increasing demand for midwifery services, so this new wave of locally educated and trained graduates will help to ensure the State's health services continue to meet the needs of Tasmanian women and families.

"Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we've welcomed nearly 1,450 additional staff into our health system since April as part of our recruitment blitz."

The midwives completed a two year, fast-track Bachelor of Midwifery for registered nurses through the University of Southern Queensland, which has delivered the program in Tasmania since 2017.

"We are delighted to welcome these new graduates to the midwifery profession which is such a rewarding career," Minister Petrusma said.

"Their passion and dedication will make an incredible difference to the lives of families throughout Tasmania.

"My best wishes are extended to everyone graduating today as they embark on their respective careers. I also want to thank the staff who have supported these midwives during their studies."
