The Tasmanian Government has welcomed our next generation of Tasmanian doctors, as dozens of medical interns start their professional journeys across the State's public hospitals.
The 2025 intake has seen 75 medical interns – or first year doctors – begin their placements after graduating from their medical degrees, with an additional 18 doctors to begin in March.
Minister for Health, Jacquie Petrusma, said the new doctors will perform a vital role at the frontline of our health services.
"Medical interns play a key role in providing the quality care that Tasmanians deserve, and I'm delighted to welcome the 2025 cohort of new interns to the Tasmanian Health Service (THS)," Minister Petrusma said.
"Tasmania is a fantastic place for doctors to begin their careers, with an abundance of opportunities to learn and grow, and best of all – to make a real difference to their local communities.
"After completing orientation programs with their new hospitals, the doctors have now joined their teams on hospital wards as an important part of our medical workforce.
"During their first year, they'll rotate through a variety of specialties across the hospital, including the Emergency Department, surgery and general medicine, to gain widespread experience.
"Importantly, the majority of our new interns are local graduates who recently completed their medical studies at the University of Tasmania – we're so pleased to see Tasmanian-trained medical students working in our hospital system in their first year.
"Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, our Government has now welcomed more than 1,830 healthcare workers since April last year as part our recruitment blitz."
Hundreds of resident medical officers – doctors with one to three years of previous experience – also begin new placements across the State this month, with many of these having chosen to continue to work with the THS.
