West Coast Needs Job Certainty

Tasmanian Government

Hundreds of workers on the West Coast are quite rightly wondering what it will take for the Prime Minister to save their jobs.

While the Tasmanian Government welcomes the Commonwealth's investment in improving the health of Macquarie Harbour, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's cash splash has failed to provide the much-needed certainty for hundreds of families whose livelihoods rely on Tasmania's world-class salmon industry.

It appears that Labor is more interested in backing Greens-led sensitivities than real jobs.

The Tasmanian Government has always believed salmon farming can co-exist with the Maugean skate in Macquarie Harbour.

We know that oxygenation levels are now the best they have been in 10 years, demonstrating the efforts currently underway are working.

This is why there is absolutely no reason the Prime Minister couldn't have announced these jobs would be saved, today.

While Albanese remains beholden to inner-city mainland voters ahead of the next federal election, the Tasmanian Government will continue to fight tooth and nail to protect the jobs that are under threat by the Federal Labor Government.

Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania Future, we will continue to stand up for our sustainable aquaculture industries as well as the unique natural environments in which they operate – not sacrificing either for the sake of the other.
