In a heart-racing finish to the Cricket Victoria Country Cup, the Under 15 Girls' final saw the Western Waves emerge victorious over the Central Highlands at Monivae College on Thursday.
Batting first, Central Highlands posted a competitive total of 6/155 from their allotted 40 overs, with solid contributions from their batting lineup. The Waves faced a challenging task, but their determination shone through in an enthralling chase.
The defining moment came with Western Waves' number 11 batter, Gemma Dance, stepping up under immense pressure. With the team needing just four runs to secure victory and three overs remaining, Dance struck a boundary off her very first delivery, sealing the win in style for her side.
For Central Highlands, Tanae Grero was named the Manhari Player of the Final, having made an impressive 57 with the bat and taking 1/10 from 7 overs with the ball. Grero was also named the Manhari Player of the Competition, finishing as the leading wicket-taker with 12 wickets at an extraordinary average of 3.08.
Adding to their success, the Western Waves pulled off the double by clinching the Under 16 Boys final, defeating Gippsland by 25 runs in a tightly fought contest at Kiewa on Thursday. Western Waves' Harry Hicks was named the Manhari Player of the Final for his outstanding performance with the ball, taking 4/23 from 9.5 overs. Gippsland's Henry Allsopp was named the Manhari Player of the Competition for his impressive 173 runs at an average of 57.
This thrilling conclusion highlighted the exceptional talent and composure of the players involved, reflecting the spirit and cricket development in country Victoria.
