The Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering better and safer roads around Tasmania.
The community is invited to have their say on proposed upgrades to improve safety and connectivity between West Tamar communities and Launceston.
Feedback received from the community will be used in creating a Corridor Improvement Plan, which will guide investment in the West Tamar Highway between Launceston CBD and north of Legana over the next 20 years.
The study supports the Tasmanian Government's plan to improve safety and traffic flow in Launceston and the Tamar Valley.
The Government has committed to invest $84 million in upgrades to the East and West Tamar Highways. Building on the Australian Government's commitment of $16 million to the West Tamar Highway, this will deliver a $100 million package of targeted upgrades to both sides of the Tamar, including lane separation, junction upgrades and overtaking lanes, and integrating with the new Tamar River Bridge.
The Tasmanian Government has already delivered $1.5 million of cycling facilities between Launceston and Legana as well as major upgrades to the West Tamar Highway north of Legana.
The proposed further improvements include upgrading intersections, road duplication, road realignment and shoulder widening, and reviews of traffic signal operations, bus services and speed limits.
Federal Liberal Member for Bass, Bridget Archer encouraged West Tamar locals to have their say on the proposed upgrades to ensure the end result best meets their needs.
"It has been important to me to hear from individuals and groups in the area about what they think is needed and this consultation is another valuable part of the process," Ms Archer said.
Feedback is being invited from today to Wednesday, 18 August 2021.
Information about the proposed improvements is available at the West Tamar Council office at 2-4 Eden Street, Riverside during business hours on weekdays. Forms will be available for people to provide comments.
Feedback can also be provided via an interactive map on the Transport website: https://www.transport.tas.gov.au/projectsplanning/road_projects/north_east_road_projects/west_tamar_highway_-_launceston_to_legana_-_corridor_study
The final Corridor Improvement Plan will be released in October 2021.
