  • The vital role of unpaid carers is being recognised during 2022 National Carers Week, which runs from 16-22 October.

The national campaign, which embraces the theme of 'Millions of Reasons to Care', provides an opportunity to recognise, celebrate and raise awareness about the diversity of Australia's estimated 2.65 million carers and their caring roles. In Western Australia, more than 320,000 people provide unpaid care and support for a family member or friend.

In supporting WA carers, the McGowan Government, through the Department of Communities, provides more than $1 million in funding to Carers WA to deliver care support services and programs including counselling and training, social support, advice, respite, employment and engagement activities.

As part of the 2022 National Carers Week celebrations in WA, the Yagan Square digital tower will screen videos each day throughout the week to highlight the stories, experiences and achievements of WA carers.

Notable city landmarks including Optus Stadium, the Matagarup Bridge, Perth Bell Tower and the East Perth Power Station will be lit up in the campaign colour of aqua blue, to help spread the message of the important role of carers.

Landmarks across regional WA will also be lit up in aqua blue, including the Kununurra Courthouse; boab trees in Celebrity Tree Park, Kununurra; Albany Town Square; the Kalgoorlie Library and Eastern Goldfields Community Centre.

Western Australians can show their support for carers via social media, by posting photos with the hashtag #shareyourcare.

Further details on the national campaign can be found on the National Carers Week webpage.

As stated by Community Services Minister Simone McGurk:

"The important work carers do every day is often underestimated, as is the money they save taxpayers. But no dollar figure captures the dedication, love and insight that carers provide.

"Many carers fall into their roles by circumstance, and it's the love for the person they care for that keeps them going. But simply identifying as a carer can allow them to access a range of supports to make their journey that little bit easier.

"Carers look after some of our most vulnerable. It's among the most important and selfless work in the community, and I thank all those who dedicate their lives to helping those who need it most."
