Western District Tackling Shoplifting Offences

Tasmania Police in the Western District are actively addressing shoplifting incidents in the lead-up to Christmas, ensuring a safer retail environment for businesses and the community.

On Friday, 13 December 2024, Burnie Police arrested and charged a 15-year-old youth with eight counts of shoplifting-related offences.

The youth is alleged to have stolen a range of items from several retail outlets over recent weeks.

On Saturday, 14 December 2024, Devonport Police arrested and charged a 19-year-old female with stealing following an incident at a local store.

Since 1 December 2024, Western District Police have arrested and charged 12 offenders with shoplifting-related offences.

Acting Inspector Luke Negri praised the swift action of officers and highlighted the importance of ongoing vigilance.

"If you shoplift, expect to be apprehended, arrested, and held to account. This behaviour is unacceptable," Acting Inspector Negri said.

"Tasmania Police are committed to tackling shoplifting offences, particularly during the busy festive season. These arrests send a clear message that this type of criminal behaviour will not be tolerated. We understand the pressures retailers face at this time of year, and we're increasing our presence in and around shopping precincts to deter theft and provide reassurance to businesses and shoppers alike."

Shoplifting has wider economic impacts, including increased costs for retailers and higher prices for consumers.

This proactive policing forms part of Operation Swipe, a statewide initiative by Tasmania Police focusing on preventing shoplifting and holding offenders to account.

In the lead-up to Christmas, members of the public can expect to see an increased police presence, including additional foot and vehicle patrols around retail areas.

"This enhanced visibility is part of our proactive approach to preventing crime and ensuring a safe and enjoyable holiday period for everyone," Acting Inspector Negri added. Tasmania Police urge anyone with information about shoplifting or other criminal activity to come forward.
