The Western Downs region has been recognised as a leader in art tourism, with two local projects named finalists in the 2023 National Street Art Awards.
Western Downs Regional Council's Miles CBD Streetscape Project and Wandoan's Soldier Settlers Avenue of Honour have both been named finalists in the national awards, which celebrate excellence in art tourism.
Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Events and Regional Promotion Councillor Kylie Bourne said it was fantastic to see two special projects recognised on the national stage.
"Council continues to invest in projects that boost our great liveability and this recognition demonstrates our ability to deliver high calibre projects with community backing," Councillor Bourne said.
"Both the Miles CBD Streetscape and the Wandoan Soldier Settlers Avenue of Honour incorporate creative stories about our region's past, paying homage to the people and places that have played an integral role in the region's identity.
"Ensuring these stories are shared in such a way that captivates locals and visitors was always important to Council, and it's great to see our local artists also receiving recognition for their works."
The Miles CBD Streetscape is a finalist in the Best Street Art Trail category while the Wandoan Soldier Settlers Avenue of Honour is a finalist in the Best Monument or Memorial category.
Awards Director Liz Rivers said "The Awards provide a platform where trailblazing destinations – cities, regional towns and precincts – can be recognised for their contribution to both the world of street art and art tourism.
"Each of the communities acknowledged through these Awards have made their mark as a must-see destination for art lovers," she said.
The Australian Street Art Awards was the tourism industry's first, and remains the largest, recognition program for excellence and innovation in art tourism.
"Being shortlisted in these Awards further cements the Western Downs region's reputation as an aspirational destination for everyone who loves to discover visually stunning experiences," Ms Rivers said.
The winners will be announced on 10 February.
Council acknowledges the patience of residents and businesses during the construction of these fantastic projects.
