A NSW Government program to transform Western Sydney into a global leader in smart cities technology has been recognised as a finalist in the prestigious World Smart City Awards.
Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said the nomination demonstrated the value of the NSW Government's commitment to smart cities policy and funding.
"Our investments in modern data systems and technology is helping to improve the liveable and vibrancy of many communities across Western Sydney," Mr Dominello said.
"The Smart Western City Program has been recognised as a finalist because Western Sydney is a world-leading place for innovation and investment - and we are in with a fighting chance at winning the Award, as a direct result of the NSW Government's investments and partnership."
Over the past 18 months, the NSW Government has invested around $12 million from the Smart Places Acceleration Program to help drive adoption of smart technologies in Western Sydney, in partnership with local councils, industry, and the innovation sector.
"We have been finding new solutions to old problems like providing better roads, improving air quality, being smarter with water and tackling urban heat - all with the help of smart technologies," Mr Dominello said.
"The Smart Western City Program is our flagship and we want to scale our successes to make sure all communities across NSW benefit and that no one is left behind.
"That is why we have today unveiled the SmartNSW Roadmap, an ambitious five-year plan to make sure NSW remains the number one smart state in Australia."
Mr Dominello said the Roadmap will help NSW to solidify its strategic advantage in smart cities technology helping us attract talent to support future industries," Mr Dominello said.
The SmartNSW Roadmap includes 14 actions for the NSW Government between 2022 and 2027, to support widespread adoption of technology and data solutions.
Minister for Transport, Veterans and Western Sydney David Elliott said the recognition in the World Smart City Awards is reflective of the NSW Government's commitment and investment in the fast growing Western Sydney region.
"More and more families are calling Western Sydney home and we want to make life easier for them through innovation and technology. It's great to see the region recognised on the world stage," Mr Elliott said.
