Westpac NZ ATMs Now Support Tongan, Samoan, Hindi

Westpac NZ has rolled out Tongan, Samoan and Hindi language options to all 373 ATMs in its network.

Westpac NZ Acting MD Consumer Banking & Wealth Andrew Twidle says the update is intended to better support users in the language of their choice.

"New Zealand is a multicultural society, so we want to make sure we're reflecting that in the services we provide," Mr Twidle says.

"We've had English, Mandarin and Te Reo Māori language options on our ATMs for some time and it's fantastic to now be able to support more people with the addition of Tongan, Samoan and Hindi."

After inserting their card in a Westpac-branded ATM, users are presented with a range of options, including choice of language. Once they've selected their desired language, the menu options will then appear in that language.

The language options are available on both regular and Smart Westpac ATMs, meaning customers can navigate through making withdrawals, deposits and balance enquiries, as well as paying bills, in their chosen language.

"It sounds like a simple change, but it's something we know will make a meaningful difference to many Kiwis, as well as visitors to our country," Mr Twidle says.

"We want to make sure everyone feels confident about using our ATMs for their banking needs."

Westpac ATMs are free to use for customers of other NZ banks. Fees may apply for customers of overseas banks.

The ATM update is the latest initiative in Westpac's efforts to make banking easier for people who prefer not to communicate in English.

Last year the bank introduced a partnership with interpreting service Language Loop. The service means Westpac employees can quickly dial in an interpreter if a customer would prefer to communicate in another language, with calls answered in less than 1 minute.

More than 190 languages, including Hindi, Samoan, Tongan and Mandarin, are supported by Language Loop. In the year since the interpreting service was introduced, customers have used it more than 350 times.
