Why won't Liberals support building inquiry?

Tasmanian Labor

The Liberal Government must explain the reason behind their cruel refusal to support a parliamentary inquiry to better protect the building industry and homeowners.

Shadow Minister for Building and Construction Jen Butler said Minister for Consumer Affairs Elise Archer had turned her back on hundreds of Tasmanians by refusing to support the inquiry.

"Since Labor raised this issue a number of weeks ago we have heard countless, heartbreaking stories from homeowners who have been badly let down by shonky builders," Ms Butler said.

"We cannot allow the building and construction industry to be undermined by a few shonky builders, whose practices frustrate and undermine the reputation of the whole industry.

"Both industry and home owners are crying out for better government oversite and protections.

"How can Ms Archer refuse to support these people? What if it was her house that was filled with defects and her only option to fix it was expensive legal action?"

Ms Butler said the Liberals need to explain why they don't support this inquiry.

"While consumers and homeowners continue to be frustrated because of issues with problem builders, the government is sitting on its hands and failing to act.

"Tasmania needs a serious, genuine inquiry to better protect both consumers and the building industry and its time the government supported it."
