More than 2500 hot cross buns will be delivered to charity this week thanks to the efforts of bakery and patisserie students at the William Angliss Institute.
Parliamentary Secretary for Training and Skills Nina Taylor today took part in the annual Bun Day celebrations, joining 60 Certificate II in Baking students at the Institute's Melbourne CBD campus. This large order will be delivered to CBD-based youth homelessness charity Frontyard, as well as local hospitality businesses.
William Angliss Institute is Australia's largest specialist training provider for foods, tourism, hospitality and events training - and at this time of year they're particularly known for their highly guarded hot cross bun recipe.
This annual Bun Day creates a real-life baking experience for students whilst supporting important, worthwhile causes for the community through the sale of the iconic seasonal treat.
The buns will provide afternoon tea for the youth and staff at Frontyard, while selected neighbouring cafes will also retain all profits from their hot cross bun sales.
Frontyard is Melbourne City Mission's specialist CBD service and supports young people with a range of programs designed to help develop pathways out of homelessness.
The Andrews Labor Government has invested more than $4.1 million through its $55 million TAFE Asset Maintenance Fund to upgrade the institute's training kitchens and restaurant, as well as creating new Gelateria and Chocolateria training facilities. The investment also included upgrades to general teaching spaces.
A limited number of hot cross buns will also be on sale at Café 555, William Angliss Institute, 555 La Trobe Street Melbourne.
