Willoughby City Council is thrilled to announce it has secured $874,420 in funding through the NSW Safe Speeds in High Pedestrian Activity and Local Areas for the 2024/25 financial year. This funding will enhance the safety and accessibility of the Castle Cove Local Centre.
The project will involve designing, consulting, and constructing a 40km/h High Pedestrian Activity Area (HPAA) within this financial year. Key features include cobblestone entry treatments, new pedestrian crossings, minor road network reconfigurations to improve intersection safety and overall pedestrian accessibility. Additionally, landscaping upgrades will further enhance the town centre.
Council will conduct community consultation with residents and businesses, considering design aspects, parking and amenities to ensure the project meets community needs.
The grant's success was based on recent comprehensive traffic survey data, showing existing speeds are already under 40km/h, therefore formalising these speeds will enhance safety.
Willoughby City Council Mayor Tanya Taylor said she was looking forward to the transformation of Castle Cove Local Centre.
