As the Horsham area heads into the holiday season, the Wimmera Emergency Management Team is reminding people to visit its Wimmera72 website to help them plan and prepare for emergencies.
Co-ordinator Kristi Sullivan said that while the Wimmera was a stunning part of western Victoria, it can also be quite dangerous.
"As with many parts of Australia, our region is prone to bushfires, floods, heatwaves and other natural disasters," she said.
Ms Sullivan said that emergencies can occur at anytime, anywhere and without warning.
"We've had significant bushfires this year and over recent years, flooding in 2022 and 2011 and a tornado in 2020."
"Because it can take time for emergency services to reach people during an emergency, it's important for everyone to be prepared and have a plan in place.
"Being prepared means having enough food, water, medication and other supplies to last at least 72 hours," she said.
Ms Sullivan said the Wimmera 72 website was a great resource for locals and visitors.
"It includes all the tools you need to be self-sufficient during an emergency in the Wimmera.
It contains important information, resources and links to a range of emergency services," she said.
Wimmera 72 is an initiative of the Wimmera Emergency Management Resource Sharing Partnership.
This important partnership between Horsham Rural City and Hindmarsh, West Wimmera and Yarriambiack Shire Councils provides co-ordinated relief and recovery for all emergencies across the Wimmera.
