Does your school have outdoor areas languishing because of no shade? We are offering one lucky school $10,000 to make outdoor areas more shady!
To be in the running, make sure your school is a part of the SunSmart program by either renewing your school's membership or joining. Entries close at 5pm on Friday 12 November 2021, with the lucky winner being drawn in National Skin Cancer Action Week , which runs from 21-27 November 2021. Schools can also win one of five SunSmart packs.
This is the 10th edition of the program with many schools benefiting from the $10,000 grant provided by Cancer Council WA. Our 2019 winners, Beaumaris Primary School, used their winnings to purchase a permanent shade structure over a little used playground.
Beaumaris Primary School's Manager of Corporate Services, Donna Attwood, said the school was grateful to have won the grant and that the shade was protecting students from excess UV radiation.
"Children found it difficult to play on this playground during summer, and as a SunSmart school our parents were always concerned about our students spending time on this playground during the highest UV times of the day.
"The shade has increased the number of kids using the playground and has provided the school with another SunSmart location for kids to utilise," said Ms. Attwood.
