Win For Tasmania's Special Interest Vehicles

Eric Abetz, Minister for Transport

Car and motorbike enthusiasts can now display their individuality through personalised number plates on their Special Interest vehicles.

Minister for Transport, Eric Abetz, said as part of the Tasmanian Government's 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, the rules around Special Interest vehicles have been relaxed to allow TasPlates personalised plates to be displayed in place of the standard "SI" number plates.

"If you have a classic vehicle or rally car with Special Interest registration, you are no longer limited to an SI plate," said Minister Abetz.

"This creates a world of opportunities to personalise your special car or motorbike with a number plate as unique as your vehicle.

"You can take your pick from the range of number plate styles available through TasPlates. If you already have custom plates that you've been holding on to for a while, now's your chance to display them proudly."

The Member for Bass, Rob Fairs, said it was a win for the 8,800 Tasmanian motoring enthusiasts who have Special Interest vehicles, many of whom already own custom plates, but have been restricted to using the standard SI plates to keep their Special Interest registration.

"We know that there are around 14,000 personalised TasPlates that have been purchased here in Tasmania but are currently not on a vehicle, going unused and collecting dust in the shed," said Mr Fairs.

"If you have personalised plates that you've been holding on to for a while, waiting for the opportunity to display them on your pride and joy, you now have the option to do just that."

Special Interest vehicles can be driven a maximum of 104 days a year, with owners required to record their outings in a logbook. In return, the vehicles receive discounted registration and MAIB insurance fees.

To qualify for Special Interest registration, cars and motorbikes must be at least 30 years old, or a replica of a vehicle released at least 30 years ago, and in exceptional condition.
