When it comes to artistic pursuits, there's nothing more valuable that imagination – but time and space run a close second.
It's a lesson Wollongong Youth Services Young Artist in Residence Yasmin Coomes has learned through her first ever residency that will culminate in her maiden exhibition next month.
The recent university graduate says that, while inspiration is not hard to find, opportunities to turn it into true creative practice are few. It's what made her time in residence so valuable.
"This was my first artist residency, and everything about it felt new and exciting," she said.
"It gave me the time, space, and support to just focus on creating, which was such a gift. One of the most rewarding parts has been connecting with young people and using the space as a creative outlet, not just for myself but for them as well.
"The support I've received, especially from the Youth Services Team, has been incredible. It's amazing how much you can accomplish when you have people in your corner cheering you on."
It's why, with expressions of interest for the next 12-month residency at the Youth Centre still open until 21 March, Yasmin's encouraging any burgeoning local artist s (aged 18-24) to lodge an application.
"It's a great opportunity to have a space to create, gain experience, and build confidence," she said.
"Everyone has to start somewhere, and the artist residency at the Youth Centre is such a great place to take that first step. For any young artists out there, take chances, apply for residencies, and put yourself out there. You never know what opportunities might come your way when you follow what truly excites you.
"The support I've received has meant the world, and I can't wait to see where this journey takes me next."
Yasmin's work will be showcased alongside the work of Wollongong Creative Studio's six outgoing Artists in Residence as part of the Connections exhibition at Wollongong Art Gallery's Community Gallery from 4-27 April.
The exhibition featuring the work of Tim Baker, Dr Virginia Keft (Muruwari), Matthew Grayson, Rhiannon Pegler, Michelle Heldon, Haji Oh and Yasmin Coombes explores the different layers of connections. Connections through people, origin, science, stories and play.
Connections celebrates diversity in both subject and discipline through photography, print making, painting, sculpture, textiles and weaving. Artists will be in attendance for the official exhibition opening and artist talks on 5 April from 12-2pm
