Woman Charged After Body Found in Maribyrnong River

Homicide Squad detectives have arrested two people today as part of their investigation into the discovery of a woman's body in the Maribyrnong River on Sunday morning.

The woman's body was located by a passerby about 10.30am on 14 July in an area of the river near Smithfield Road, Flemington.

The woman is yet to be formally identified.

Detectives arrested a 49-year-old West Footscray woman and a 15-year-old West Footscray boy this afternoon as part of their investigation.

The pair were interviewed by police and the woman was charged with murder.

The 15-year-old boy was released without charge.

The 49-year-old woman was remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 17 July.

It is believed they are known to the deceased woman.

Investigators are keen to speak to anyone who has CCTV or dash-cam footage from the areas around Glamis Road in West Footscray or Smithfield Road, Flemington near Lynch's Bridge, between 12pm on Friday, 12 July and 10.30am on Sunday, 14 July.

Police are also keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in those areas during that time.

Detectives from Maribyrnong Crime Investigation Unit are investigating the discovery of a man's body in the Maribyrnong River on Sunday morning.

This matter is not linked to the death of the West Footscray woman.

The man is yet to be formally identified however police are not treating his death as suspicious at this time.
