Woman Charged With Two Counts Of Animal Ill-treatment

Cases scheduled for court hearings in October 2024

A 56-year-old Semaphore Park woman has been charged with two counts of ill-treatment of an animal. The woman allegedly failed to provide adequate and appropriate food and water for eight cats and failed to provide adequate and appropriate living conditions for the animals. On 3 October 2024, in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court she was granted a short adjournment. The court granted the RSPCA's application that the cats be forfeited to the Minister, and they will be available for adoption soon.

A 49-year-old man from Paechtown is due to appear in the Mount Barker Magistrates Court to face a charge of ill treatment of an animal. The man is alleged to have used a riding helmet to repeatedly strike a horse on its head, thereby allegedly causing unnecessary harm to the animal.

A 36-year-old woman from Elizabeth Vale is due to appear before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court to face four counts of ill-treatment of an animal. Counts one and two concern a seven-year-old male dog. Count one alleges the woman caused death or serious harm to the dog by failing to provide adequate food. Count two alleges she failed to obtain veterinary care for the dog in the days before his death when he was clearly unwell and suffering. Count three alleges the woman ill-treated three cats by failing to provide drinking water and appropriate living conditions. Count four alleges the woman failed to obtain veterinary care for one of the cats. The four-year-old female cat was suffering from multiple abscesses in and around her mouth, ulceration of her tongue, stomatitis, infected ears and dental disease. Due to the cat's extreme poor condition, she was humanely euthanased.

A 32-year-old Elizabeth Park woman is due before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on six animal cruelty charges including three counts of ill-treatment of an animal to cause death or serious harm. The woman is alleged to have failed to provide adequate and appropriate food for a dog, four cats, two birds and a lizard. RSPCA SA inspectors found all the animals except the dog deceased when they attended at the woman's property on 5 January 2024. The severely emaciated three-year-old dog died whilst in transit with an RSPCA SA inspector for urgent medical treatment. Another dog (also allegedly emaciated) and two other cats were seized, and all have been rehomed.

A 36-year-old woman and her 19-year-old son, both from Whyalla, are due to face the Whyalla Magistrates Court charged with ill-treatment of an animal. The charge is in relation to an eight-year-old male dog who was seized by an RSPCA SA inspector in April 2024 after allegedly being found in a severely emaciated state. The dog remains in protective custody with RSPCA SA.

A 64-year-old woman, her 62-year-old husband and their 28-year-old daughter, all from Davoren Park, are due to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court to face three charges of ill-treatment of an animal. The charges are in relation to two miniature poodles found suffering serious, untreated medical conditions, with one of the dogs in such poor condition he was humanely euthanised after seizure. The other dog recovered and has been rehomed.

A woman is due to face the Port Pirie Magistrates Court charged with ill treatment of an animal. The charge is in relation to two cats that were allegedly found in an outdoor cage with rubbish and faeces and without access to clean water. The cats remain in protective custody with RSPCA SA.

A 77-year-old woman and her 42-year-old son are due to face the Port Pirie Magistrates Court charged with ill-treatment of an animal to cause death or serious harm. They are alleged to have failed to take reasonable steps to mitigate serious harm suffered by a dog. After being seized by an RSPCA SA inspector in June 2024, the 10-year-old dog was assessed by a vet and found to be suffering from advanced infection in both ears, chronic dental disease, an abscess in his right anal sack and an oronasal fistula. The dog has recovered and, as the owners recently surrendered him to the RSPCA, he will soon be available for adoption.

A 37-year-old Findon woman is due before the Christies Beach Magistrates Court to face three charges of ill-treatment of an animal. The charges are in relation to two cats that were allegedly abandoned. One of the cats was allegedly left locked inside a Morphett Vale unit without food and water for several weeks. The cat was humanely euthansed due to catastrophic impacts of severe emaciation and dehydration. The other cat has been adopted.

A 61-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman from the northern suburbs are due before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court to face three charges of animal ill-treatment. The first charge is for alleged failure to provide appropriate and adequate food, water, living conditions or exercise for two ponies and a horse. All the animals were found in emaciated condition on a property south of Gawler. The second charge is for alleged failure to get veterinary treatment for one of the ponies, who was very unwell and had a large, infected wound on her face, neck and jaw area. The third charge is for alleged failure to provide appropriate and adequate food, water, living conditions or exercise and alleged failure to mitigate harm suffered by two dogs. One was emaciated, the other thin and suffering a severe chronic ear infection and both dogs were bleeding and itching with huge flea burdens.
