Homicide Squad detectives have identified the body of a woman as their investigation into yesterday's discovery in Parkville continues.
Police were called to Elliott Avenue about 9.15am yesterday (25 May) after the woman's body was located by passers-by.
She has since been identified as Courtney Herron, a 25-year-old woman of no fixed residence.
Police believe she was assaulted at the scene overnight, sometime between Friday 24 May and 9.25am on Saturday 25 May.
Investigators are still working to establish the exact circumstances leading up to Courtney's death.
The last confirmed sighting of Courtney was on 14 May in St Albans.
Police are currently making contact with associates of Courtney and building a picture of her recent movements, but require further information in this regard.
Images of Courtney have been released in the hope someone recognises her and can provide information that will assist investigators in tracing her movements between then and yesterday.
At the time of her death, Courtney was wearing a light brown sleeveless vest/jacket, a black hoodie, black track pants, black runners and a blue singlet top, which featured pink buildings, gold sequins and a large blue rose on the lower right side.
Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper said detectives and forensic scientists had been working through the night and were keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time and seen anything suspicious.
"We are committed to finding the person, or people, responsible for this horrific attack," Detective Insp Stamper said.
"We are appealing for the community's help and remind them that no piece of information is too big or too small.
"We know a number of people use this park and urge anyone with information or who may have seen anything suspicious to come forward."
There is expected to be an increased police presence, with officers patrolling the area.
The investigation remains ongoing.
