We are taking time this week to celebrate International Women's Day and showcase female officers within the Queensland Police Service (QPS) who inspire, empower and succeed in their roles.
Senior Constable Jodie Rowell is an officer with Brisbane Water Police with 14 years with QPS under her inflatable vest.
"I wanted to become a police officer to be a part of making the community a better place," she said.
A background in Surf Life Saving and Volunteer Marine Rescue in Mackay provided Senior Constable Rowell with a solid background in activities in and around the water, leading her to apply to join the Brisbane Water Police.
"Being a Water Police Officer is physically challenging, but while we work in a high-risk environment on the water, we have tremendous variety in the work we do.
Senior Constable Rowell says the weather can dramatically change the nature of her work, so she has to be adaptable and prepared for every possibility.
"My workdays can take me from marine safety compliance checks with water vessel in creeks, rivers and offshore, to a full-scale search and rescue operation.
"We deal with a broad range of tasks as Water Police Officers, including maintenance of vessels, marine investigations, community engagement and patrols."
Water Police Officers work extensively with external agencies to improve awareness and compliance with marine safety amongst those using the waterways.
"Unsafe practices on the water can easily become life-endangering, so I find working together with other agencies to ensure the safety of others on the water a fulfilling part of my role," said Senior Constable Rowell.
When asked about the advice she would give to someone considering a career as a police officer, Senior Constable Rowell said qualities such as compassion, passion and self-motivation are essential for anyone wanting to become an officer.
"Don't hesitate - give it a try," she said.
"You will be a better person for it."
QPS officers have shared their journey to help inspire Queenslanders to take a close look at a policing vocation when considering their potential profession.
