Work begins on Stage 1 of Huntingfield subdivision

The Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering on its plan to release more land for affordable residential development to increase housing supply.

Subdivision works at Huntingfield have started with the $14.8 million construction tender awarded to Tasmanian company, DCS Civil (Tas) Pty Ltd. This contract alone equates to an almost $43 million economic boost for Kingborough and Southern Tasmania.

The works will deliver the first 30 residential lots in Stage 1 of the Huntingfield redevelopment anticipated for purchase off the plan in late 2023.

Subdivision works will deliver new road construction and the installation of all essential housing infrastructure connections, such as water and sewerage, electricity, and telecommunications.

Stage 1 will deliver around 210 lots of land, increasing the supply of affordable, well-located, residential land and affordable and social housing options in southern Tasmania.

''I commend Simon Heazlewood and his team, from DCS Civic, who is delivering both the subdivision works and new roundabout. These are massive projects for the Kingborough community that will deliver vital new infrastructure, create jobs and apprenticeships with DCS Civil and local subcontractors,'' Minister Barnett said.

''Huntingfield is being developed in stages because it is a complex subdivision involving numerous statutory assessments and consultation periods, and civil and subdivision construction works, and it is essential that we deliver land parcels at every opportunity.

''Stages 2 and 3 are adjacent the Peter Murrell Reserve and received approval last month after an extensive assessment under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

''Feedback from this consultation has helped inform improvements to the design process for the master plan and the Stage 1 design,'' Minister Barnett said.

Huntingfield is the largest of 10 sites rezoned under the Tasmanian Government's Housing Land Supply Act.

Planning approval for Stage 1 took 10 months to complete and around 15 per cent of lots will be retained for social housing and up to 35 per cent made available for affordable home ownership, including under Homes Tasmania's MyHome shared equity program.

The remainder will be offered as open market sales.

The delivery of 210 lots for Stage 1 will inject over $100 million in economic activity into the local community and create over 260 full-time jobs.

The total Huntingfield project will deliver around 470 lots of land, subject to finalising the Master Plan and further consultation with key stakeholders on Stages 2 and 3, including with the Council.

The Rockliff Liberal Government knows that increasing land and housing supply is the best way to ease housing and rental pressures which is why we are funding the most ambitious social and affordable housing plan in Tasmanian history.

Our $1.5 billion plan will deliver 10,000 new social and affordable homes and units by 2032 and we are on track with our target of 1500 homes by June 30 with 914 completed as at the end of April 2023.
