Working together with Tasmanian Aboriginal People

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs

It was good to meet with the Aboriginal Heritage Council recently.

I will continue to work closely with the Aboriginal Heritage Council to support our ongoing commitment to promote and manage Tasmania's unique Aboriginal cultural heritage values.

As part of that recent meeting, I reaffirmed my commitment to Tasmanian Aboriginal people.

I look forward to working with all Tasmanian Aboriginal people to close the gap, to hear the truth, to tell the truth and to the best of our ability, provide processes that are fair, respectful, and inclusive to ensure Aboriginal people are part of the decision-making on matters that affect them.

As I said in Parliament* earlier this year, I am in awe of the Tasmanian Aboriginal people, ancestors and descendants, whose lineage has survived the violence and the tragic and traumatic history of Tasmania over the last two centuries, and who carry its effects to this day.

I deeply recognise and respect that survival and that pain.

The Tasmanian Government will continue to work with all Tasmanian Aboriginal people, in partnership, on a shared journey towards true reconciliation.

Mr Speaker, I am in awe of the Tasmanian Aboriginal people, ancestors and descendants, whose lineage has survived the violence and the tragic and traumatic history of Tasmania over the last two centuries, and who carry its effects to this day. I deeply recognise and respect that survival and that pain.

I am determined, as Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, with the responsibilities I have, to work with Tasmanian Aboriginal people, all Aboriginal people in Tasmania, to understand, to close the gap, to hear the truth, to tell the truth and to the best of our ability provide processes that are fair, respectful, inclusive and genuine to ensure Aboriginal people are part of the decision-making on matters that affect them. I absolutely committed to that, and always have.
