Working towards a zero waste Peninsula

Mornington Peninsula Shire Council is adopting an ambitious target to send zero waste to landfill by 2030.

Following a review of Council's Waste Strategy in 2019 and extensive community consultation, the Shire has developed its Draft Beyond Zero Waste Strategy setting targets to help achieve this essential goal.

The local community and visitors are now invited to provide feedback and suggestions on the Draft Strategy.

The 10-year Strategy aims to:

  • Empower the community to avoid, reuse and recycle
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Maximise Resource Recovery
  • Maintain a Clean and Healthy Peninsula
  • Improve reporting and monitor progress toward achieving zero waste
  • Advocate for regional and state solutions and support innovative local circular economy.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Sam Hearn said "we're proud of the active and passionate community who have led a wide range of successful local initiatives to improve waste and litter management across the region".

"The Strategy aims to bring together these ideas from our community, from everyday actions to innovation on approaches to a zero waste Peninsula through minimising our waste and by improving our resource recovery and recycling. It's all about us as a community moving towards a way of life that is in balance with the environment that sustains our existence".
