World Bank Backs Sustainable Digital Shift in Sergipe

WASHINGTON, DC, March 18, 2025 - The World Bank Board of Directors has approved financing to enhance digital infrastructure, expand broadband access, increase energy efficiency, and modernize public services in the state of Sergipe, Brazil. This $53.6 million financing package is part of the "Sergipe Efficient Digital Acceleration Project," aimed at boosting connectivity, improving digital public services, and ensuring sustainable energy solutions for digital transformation.

By enhancing digital resilience and expanding access to essential services, the project will help empower communities across Sergipe, equipping them with the resources needed to succeed in an increasingly digital world.

Sergipe faces significant challenges in digital inclusion, with some of the lowest broadband access rates in Brazil, outdated data infrastructure, and limited digital public services. On the other hand, energy systems in public buildings are inefficient and fail to provide adequate energy services to their users, such as cooling and lighting. This project will directly contribute to breach these gaps by improving connectivity for schools, hospitals, and public institutions, providing digital services to underserved population while also strengthening cybersecurity and data protection and implementing energy efficient measures.

"The World Bank is proud to support Sergipe's digital transformation efforts," said Johannes Zutt, World Bank Country Director for Brazil. "This project will help bridge the digital divide, enhance access to essential services, and promote sustainable digital infrastructure for the future, while also improving the energy performance of public buildings and reducing energy costs."

Key Project Highlights:

  • Upgrade Digital Infrastructure: Expansion of high-capacity broadband networks to unserved and underserved areas, connecting public institutions such as schools and healthcare centers.
  • Modernize Public Services: Implementation of a digital government platform to improve service delivery, efficiency, and accessibility for citizens.
  • Energy Efficiency: Install efficient and distributed power systems to support digital infrastructure while reducing energy costs and carbon emissions.
  • Digital Inclusion and Skills Development: Training programs for youth, women, and marginalized communities to enhance digital literacy for better jobs.

This initiative aligns with Brazil's broader digital transformation and sustainability strategies, fostering inclusive development, strengthening government efficiency, and creating new economic opportunities.
