World-class skate park to open in Yamba

Yamba is now home to one of Australia's premier skateboarding destinations with the completion of the Yamba Skate Park upgrade.

The revamped skate park is now more than 1000 square metres bigger than the original skate park to cater for the ever-growing popularity of skateboarding and roller sports in the coastal town of Yamba.

"This upgrade is an exciting addition to the Clarence Valley's busiest skate park," Clarence Valley Council Manager Open Spaces and Facilities Peter Birch said.

"It now not only has such a diverse range of new obstacles, ramps, stairs, rails, flats, and lots of fun, creativity-inspired skateable elements, but also boasts a super advanced and fast three-metre deep clover-style bowl to rival any skate park on the east coast of Australia."

The official opening will be held at the new world-class facility on the corner of Coldstream Street and River Street on Saturday, 30 July from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

There will be a Welcome to Country, live music, DJs, skateboarding demos, a 'skate bowl jam' competition, food and coffee vans, plus heaps of prizes and free giveaways. It is a free community event and Federal and State MPs and local councillors will be in attendance.

There is also improved shaded seating areas, hang out spaces, landscaped gardens with local palms, native grasses and shrubs, and improved pedestrian access.

The Clarence Valley Council project was assisted by funding from the Federal Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. Federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan secured $500,000 towards upgrading the skate park, and said it was exciting to see it completed.

"The skate park is in the heart of Yamba, surrounded by a newly upgraded playground and also sporting fields. This makes it a great spot for families, young people and tourists," Mr Hogan said.

The centrally located skate park will likely help further invigorate Yamba, attracting locals and tourists to the CBD. It is set to become a cultural hub for local skateboarders and visitors alike while offering skate enthusiasts a world-class facility never seen before in the Clarence Valley.

The final design was borne out of the vision and passion of the Yamba Skate Working Crew (pictured above) - a committee established in 2020 and made up of Council representatives, community members and skaters to reinvigorate the space and create a design generated from the heart and soul of the community.
