World Food Day at Reflections Holiday Parks - Shop Local and Celebrate Your Food

With World Food Day being celebrated across more than 150 countries this Sunday, Reflections Holiday Parks is encouraging guests to share a meal together, shop local and support their local farmers. World Food Day is celebrated on the 16^th of October every year with this Sunday marking its 77^th year of raising awareness creating a sustainable food future. Reflections Holiday Parks CEO Nick Baker said Reflections has the privilege to look after more than 9,000 hectares of Crown land parks and community nature reserves to ensure their future sustainability for the people of NSW. "Awareness around food sustainability is highlighted on World Food Day," Nick said. "Our guests and visitors are encouraged to shop locally with many of our parks positioned within a short drive to some great Farmer's Markets where they can source delicious and fresh local produce and talk with the people who grew and nurtured the food they are about to eat. "The connection between the land and our food is important with a number of our parks also featuring community gardens which grow a variety of herbs, fruit and vegies." Reflections Forster Beach Manager Justine Syme said their park has a large community garden space which is a great source of salads, fruits and herbs for guests and an educational tool as well. "Our community planter boxes all have QR codes which guests can use to learn about the origins and nature of the food they are picking and the best times to plant and harvest it," Justine said. "The QR codes also lead to cool food and cocktail recipes related to what is in the garden at the time. "Our community planter boxes are located next to our camp kitchen so guests can grab herbs and salad greens while they are cooking. We have every kind of herb you can think of and our space is also jam packed with beetroot, spinach, lettuce and tomatoes at the moment. Kids also love our gorgeous passionfruit vines which they munch on while they are running around." Reflections Seal Rocks Manager Katie Toney said they created a community garden during lock down which has since become a real feature of the park. "Our garden offers everything keeping kids' snacking at bay with cherry tomatoes and strawberries or herbs to jazz up your camp dinners," Katie said. "The camp garden is very popular with guests and kids love getting their hands dirty maintaining the harvest. Food shows our connection to the land and now more than ever it is important to teach our kids where their food comes from. It has been really fun to watch all the little ones help in our garden and then eat the fruits of their labour." Further up the North Coast at Reflections North Haven, the manager Peggy Kelly swears by the Farmer's Markets at Laurieton and Port Macquarie. "We always refer our guests to these markets as a great source of locally produced food and produce," Peggy said. "Here at the park we also have a small herb garden for guests which pack a flavour punch to anything they may be preparing. We also have lovely lemon trees which guests can take advantage of anytime. Nothing beats fresh fruit off the tree and my lemon meringues are the absolute best."
