Wynnum Social Housing Fast-Tracked for Queenslanders

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Planning and Minister for Public Works The Honourable Meaghan Scanlon
  • Miles Government fast-tracks, approves plans for 50 homes in Wynnum
  • Six-storey building with one, two-bedroom social housing units
  • Part of Miles Government's Homes for Queenslanders plan to deliver one million homes, including 53,500 social homes
  • At risk of LNP cuts

The Miles Government has given the planning green light to 50 new social homes in Wynnum.

Member for Lytton Joan Pease announced the Planning Minister had fast-tracked approvals for a mix of one and two-bedroom units using the Ministerial Infrastructure Designation Process.

The MID process provides an alternative process to a traditional council development application, and is helping to deliver more social and affordable housing sooner.

Submitted by community housing provider Bric Housing, the homes will be located close to the Wynnum train station, community and allied health services, and supermarkets.

It's part of the Miles Government's Homes for Queenslanders plan to deliver one million homes, including 53,500 more social homes.

Minister Scanlon said another 746 homes are currently going through the MID process, but that homes and the government's plan were all at risk to the LNP's cuts.

As stated by Member for Lytton Joan Pease:

"Whether it's providing cost of living relief, better health services or more homes – I've fought hard to make sure we're doing what matters for our community.

"Fast-tracking approvals on these homes means Bric Housing will be able to get shovels in the ground sooner.

"Our community deserves a government that will do what matters, not the LNP who cut homes last time and will do it all again if given the chance."

As stated by Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon:

"This project, alongside the almost 1,000 social homes we have under construction, shows that we're delivering our Homes for Queenslanders plan.

"We're partnering with community housing providers to boost our social housing Big Build and deliver more homes, faster.

"Through the MID process, we're able to streamline the approvals needed for large social and affordable developments across the state.

"That's unlike the LNP who when they attack programs like our Housing Invesment Fund are actually attacking community housing providers.

"It's unsurprising given David Crisafulli has appointed the same bloke who sent social housing backwards, who cut the social housing construction program by 90 per cent when he was the housing minister last time.

"Lytton and Queensland cannot risk David Crisafulli and the LNP."

As stated by Bric Housing CEO Jane West:

"This development will provide much needed safe, secure and affordable homes in a great location, close to public transport, shops and services.

"With this approval in place, we can get the project under construction quickly, so that the homes will be available to those in housing need in the shortest possible time."
