Yarra City Council launches a new safety campaign targeting younger users with 3 key safety behaviours.
Since February 2022, Yarra City Council has been part of the Victorian Government's e-scooter trial in partnership with the Cities of Melbourne, Port Phillip and Ballarat.
During this time, e-scooters have offered a sustainable and affordable transport option for our community and improved the resilience of Melbourne's wider transport system.
E-scooter use has been very high in Yarra, with nearly 800,000 trips during the trial period so far.
As this new form of transport grows in popularity, it's important for the everyone to understand road rules, know where to park and maintain the accessibility of our footpaths.
We've launched a safety campaign targeting these 3 key behaviours and encouraging users to understand the laws:
- ride only in bike lanes and paths, shared paths and roads.
- always wear a helmet
- park responsibility and not block footpaths
Together with technical improvements from local operators such as geo-fencing, virtual designated parking bays, improved QR code reporting and enhanced behaviour warning, we're helping to make e-scooters a safe, sustainable and enjoyable mode of transport.
Yarra's approach to e-scooters is guided by our Transport Strategy 2022-32 – a multi-modal strategy that seeks to deliver an innovative, efficient, sustainable and accessible transport system for everyone in the community.
