"Yallabirrang," meaning "Collingwood" in the Woi-Wurrung language, was chosen in consultation with and permission of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, reflecting deep respect for the traditional custodians of the land.
The event was attended by excited children, proud parents, and key community figures.
Yallabirrang Kindergarten offers free sessional kinder for 3- and 4-year-olds, thanks to the Victorian Government's Building Blocks Grants Modular program. It represents an important step toward inclusive and accessible education, echoing our community's vision for its youngest members.
"Yallabirrang Kindergarten is a celebration of Yarra's commitment to better recognising and respecting First Nations people," said Yarra Mayor, Cr Edward Crossland.
"As the children of Yallabirrang Kindergarten play, learn, and grow, they will be continually reminded of the land's enduring history and the importance of our shared future."
In addition to $100,000 from Yarra City Council, the project received $3,640,000 from the Victorian Government, and $50,000 from Collingwood College.
