Young People To Take Spotlight This April

Tweed Shire Council

The Tweed will come alive this April with a dynamic line-up of events to celebrate NSW Youth Week 2025 - and there'll be plenty of options for young people to have fun and showcase their creativity over the NSW school holiday period.

NSW Youth Week runs from 9–17 April and is an opportunity for young people across the state to come together in their local communities. This year's theme is all about celebrating every young person's unique strengths and recognising their individual and collective power as our current and future influencers, leaders and decision-makers.

Tweed Shire Mayor Chris Cherry said the extended celebrations reflected the value the community places on its young people.

"Our young people are the heart of the Tweed's future," Cr Cherry said.

"NSW Youth Week is a great opportunity to celebrate their energy and ideas – and to show them we're listening, we value their voices, and we're here to support them to thrive.

"It's also great that this week falls within the school holidays, as we have some fantastic events and activities for young people of all ages to enjoy!"

Returning this year is Murbah Youth Fest 2025 – the biggest celebration of young people in the Tweed and its major youth-led event. It will take place on Saturday 12 April from 10 am to 4 pm at Knox Park Murwillumbah.

Festival favourites Battle of the Bands and Talent Quest will be back, alongside exciting new additions including a Cosplay Contest, an art stall for young artists to showcase and sell their work, and a variety of market stalls for young creatives.

Now in its 3rd year, the festival is growing and improving every year. It is organised by the team at the Murwillumbah Community Centre and supported by the Murwillumbah Youth Action Group – a dedicated group of young people who help bring the event to life while building leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills. The group received the 2024 Community Event of the Year award at Council's Australia Day Awards for their efforts on last year's festival.

As part of Youth Week 2025 celebrations, Tweed Regional Museum and Tweed Regional Gallery are hosting a series of hands-on workshops to inspire and engage young creatives.

At Tweed Regional Museum, participants can dive into the world of accessories and digital art with two exciting workshops for ages 12 and up: Charms for the Charming – Jewellery Workshop with Each to Own and a Digital Drawing Workshop with illustrator led by Phoebe Paradise who designed the creative behind the museum's latest exhibition, How to Draw A Dinosaur.

The Tweed Regional Gallery will host a series of free drop-in sessions for young people wanting to make their own stunning woven wristbands with Bulaan Buruugaa Ngali artist Kyra Togo.

Richmond Tweed Regional Libraries will also be offering a writing masterclass as part of Byron Writers Festival and a martial arts demonstration.

At Youth Week 2025 we also acknowledge the recent adoption of Council's new Youth Outdoor Recreation Action Plan 2025–2035 which was developed in consultation with more than 500 young people. It outlines a bold vision to improve outdoor spaces across the Tweed and create more inclusive, active and welcoming environments for young residents.
