In a proactive step towards empowering young people within the community, members of the Mitchell Youth Council met with Federal Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell in Wallan this week.
The meeting focused on the needs and concerns of young people in Mitchell Shire, covering topics such as social media, media use and effective engagement strategies for young people.
During the discussion, members of the Youth Council highlighted several critical issues currently impacting their peers, including mental health, equity and climate change.
Mr Mitchell shared insights into the government's Engage! strategy, a comprehensive approach developed in response to youth survey results aimed at supporting young people more effectively. The strategy is part of a broader effort to ensure the voices of young individuals are heard and considered in policymaking processes.
This meeting provided a platform for members of the Youth Council to express their views and concerns, and also allowed them to learn directly from a key policymaker about the mechanisms of government support for youth.
This initiative is part of the ongoing commitment of Mitchell Shire Council to involve young people in the civic process and to address their concerns through informed and dedicated policymaking.
